SE resident wins lottery grand prize
(Published August 9, 2004)

Southeast Washington resident Marcus Archibald struck it big during a June 29 taping of the D.C. Lottery's "Powerball Instant Millionaire" game show, taking home the $1 million grand prize.

While competing with lottery players from other states, Archibald made it to the final round, where he remained calm as he correctly picked the seven dollar signs hidden behind the word "powerball," to win the million-dollar prize.

The Hilltop Terrace resident said his strategy for the final game was simple: "I picked the letters in my uncle's name, Paul Brown."

Archibald, 47, said the money had come at a good time, as his wife of 17 years, Etta, recently lost her job and the family had, consequently, fallen behind on some bills. Today, things are looking up.

Now, Archibald said, his wife "can work temporarily. In fact, I might start my own business, so she can have a job." Archibald chuckled.

Besides paying bills and supporting his family, Archibald said he will use the money for other practical purposes. He said the family will visit Disney World in Florida with his two daughters and two sons, after one of his sons who is stationed in Iraq returns home. The money will also be used for upkeep on their home, he said.

Perhaps most importantly though, Archibald said he is excited about his family's newfound financial security.

"We’re glad we can walk anywhere and spend a dollar now and not have to worry," he said.--By Michael Hoffman
