Mayor pledges support for Anacostia cleanup

(Published May 17, 1999)

D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams joined regional leaders May 10 to renew a pact to clean up the Anacostia River and 176 square miles of surrounding land. Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening, Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan, and Prince George’s County Executive Wayne Curry joined the mayor in signing the Anacostia Watershed Restoration Agreement.

Williams said he would allocated $5 million of the fiscal 1999 budget surplus to the Department of Health for construction of water quality improvement projects for the Anacostia Basin.

The signing ceremony followed a boat tour of the river area. U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes and Rep. Steny Hoyer, both of Maryland, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton also attended.
