Parking fines go up March 1

(Published Feb. 24, 2003)

Fines will increase for six parking violations in the District on March 1, according to the Department of Public Works.

The fine for parking at an expired meter will increase from $15 to $25.

Fines will increase from $20 to $30 for parking in violation of official signs, such as those designating street cleaning zones. The same fines will apply to parking in “no parking” zones and public alleys, and for parking beyond a posted limit in residential areas.

Commercial vehicles, such as tour buses, will be fined $500 for parking in front of a residence or other restricted space. The fine previously was $20.

The increases were approved last summer by D.C. City Council as part of the Fiscal Year 2003 Budget Support Emergency Act of 2002.
