Board OKs calendar for 2006-2007 school year
(Published February 20, 2006)

The D.C. Board of Education has set Aug. 28 as the first day of the 2006-2007 school year.

The board voted Feb. 15 to approve the calendar for the new school year following community objections to a recommendation by Superintendent Clifford B. Janey that D.C. public schools open earlier. Many parents complained that changing the traditional start of the school year on such short notice would interfere with plans for summer camps and family vacations that were previously booked.

The board also gave preliminary approval to a proposed new regulation that would require the school board to approve school year calendars more than two years in advance.

The board is expected to vote on school calendars for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years at its June meeting.
