Cafritz: No plan to seek 3rd term
(Published January 23, 2006)

D.C. Board of Education President Peggy Cooper Cafritz says she has no plans to seek re-election to a third term this fall.

"I think it would be best if another strong person ran. ... I really think you need renewable energy on the board. These are not jobs for life," Cafritz told The Common Denominator during a telephone interview on Jan. 20.

Cafritz became the first person elected as president of the school board after voters in June 2000 approved a change in the District's home rule charter, altering the school board's composition. Previously, the school board president was selected by the board's members.

In addition to the board president, voters this fall will elect representatives for District III and District IV.
